An 18-year-old woman was killed and 22 other people were injured when a car barreled through Times Square as crowds gathered around lunchtime Thursday to enjoy the summer-like day.
The driver has been identified as 26-year-old Richard Rojas, of the Bronx.
Police quickly tackled him and rushed him away from the bloody scene. He was taken from Midtown to the Seventh Precinct to undergo drug and alcohol testing.
Police sources tell CBS2 that Rojas passed the breathalyzer test but investigators are still waiting on the results of the drug screening. Sources say he told police he smoked something before getting behind the wheel, CBS2’s Andrea Grymes reports.
Authorities say Rojas does have a criminal record, including multiple DWI charges.
